John Deere 4600 HST with 460 Loader & 72" Mid Mounted Deck
I have a John Deere 4600 HST with a Hydrostatic gearbox problem. It runs OK in forward but in reverse it makes a horrible grinding noise and no performance whatsoever. It will hardy pull its on weight in reverse. Oil level is all ok with no leaks.

Have now split the tractor and the back end is all fine with no wear on any of the gears, Also when the oil when drained it was spotless with no metal pieces.

Just wondered if anyone has had the same issues with this model.

Gary from the UK.

I would check the brakes as one of them may be locking up in reverse. Might also put the range selector in neutral or tow position and then push down on the reverse go pedal to see if you still have the noise.

Mine is now doing this also. What did you do?

He could have had a reverse pressure relief valve gone bad. or a issue with the swash plate bearing. there is a couple of tests that can be preformed. you need to get a copy of the service manual to walk you through. or take it to your dealership and have them conduct the tests. I just went through a entire transmission rebuild on a 4700. but had a different type of issue than what you're describing.
