I just bought a JD 455, and I was wondering, are there any quirks that I should be aware of? any at all? Thanks

We have two, one AWS 54" deck and the other regular steer 60" deck.
The only "quirk" I'm aware of is the tendency to overheat in hot dry weather when you're stirring up a lot of chaff. It's not really a problem, but you need to be aware and keep the intake screens clean and the radiator blown out.
I prefer the regular steering to the AWS but could get acclimated I guess.

I owned one for 3 years. I did not have any problems. It was a great tractor.

The JD 455 is in my opinion one of the best tractors that Deere has. It is a little powerhouse. It will mow in grass that would bog down other tractors and keep on going. I can't think of a thing that needs changed. You do have to keep an eye on the radiator screen as Glenn mentioned. Oh, one other thing.....................it will also mow where lots of other tractors won't!

Sincerely,
Dirt

The ONLY dislike I have with mine is that it will not mow straight.
The hydralic steering seems to make it very difficult to cut in a very straight line, and that, to me , is frustrating. Does anyone else have this problem ? I sure would love to hear how to fix it. If anyone knows the fix, please pm me. I even put on a new hydraulic steering cylinder, and it didn,t cure the wandering wheel. :(

I had one I bought new in 1997. It had 750 hours on it when I traded it for a 748. It was a very solid tractor. The only problem I had in the 15 years I had it was an alternator bearing. After I had the bearing replaced I started blowing the alternator out with compressed air, maybe that would have helped the bearing last longer. I always blow the tractor off with a leaf blower when I am done using it. I blow the radiator out as best I can also.

I tried to convince myself to keep it & still buy the 748 but common sence prevailed. I think I would have had 2 of the best Garden Tractors John Deere ever made. I love the sound of a smooth running diesel.

Just my opinioin of course.

Guido455: Check your pivot bolt for the front axle. Sometimes it get a tad loose and you will get the "wondering steering syndrom" Also I think there should be to bolts with nuts on the frame to take out any slop if I remembering it right. KJD

I can't relate to what a steering problem might be, as suggested by Guido455.
True, if holding the steering wheel in one position then the hydraulics will allow the wheels to drift so moving the steering wheel to go straight is necessary.
But as kansas suggests, there may be some loose or worn parts that need fixing.

I'm with gjw, but WON"T give up my 455. :)

Shows how reliable the 455 is. No problem posts since. ;-)
