john deere 445 starting issues

63000 is my serial number which puts me at a '98 model I believe. I saw that deere changed to a metal cam shaft in early '98.

But it begs the question why

Took fuel line off and turned key on and the pump worked fine.

??

Possible it wasn't pumping up to par?

I believe it was pumping good because when I took the fuel line off there was no resistance (compression) and it shot fuel out of the line. As soon as there is compression it will take the easiest path which was the one inch slit on the rubber hose inside the tank. So when I took one spark plug out it relieved some of that resistance. The one inch slit wasn't clear through but when I put compressed air on it it definitely leaked out.

Same here -- glad I saw this post. I would have never thought of that being the problem
