I have a John Deere 4410 that I bought about 4 months ago. This is my first tractor and do not know very much about them. I have noticed recently that there is a leak somewhere around the left rear tire. I was wondering if anyone could explain to me how I can fix the problem either:
1. A thickener that I can add to the oil
2. If it's easy to replace the seal and how or if it is a big job
3. Or if I just need to take it to the John Deere shop?

Thanks for any help provided!

:welcome: to the forum.

No need to take it to a shop if you have some interest, tools, and skills to do it yourself.

Whether it easy or a big job depends on you. It will be different for different people.
Give us an idea what your background is, and we might be able to give better suggestions for you. Have you done a search on TBN to find some threads on the axle seal?

Basic, to me, would be to get the service manual, regardless if you are going to do it yourself.

And what is the second pic showing, and does it have any connection to the leak that appears to be dripping down on the rim and then down across the tire?? Pinpointing the leak would be the first order of business.

Forget the thickener idea. Not likely a solution or a possibility.

I am not sure if this will help but you look to be over full on your hydro oil. You should be able to see the top of the level in the sight glass. I am not sure if that is the cause of your leak but it is possible.

Are your tires loaded? Did you check the hydraulic connections right above?

I see a small bubble in the sight glass. It is to the very top.

I will check the manual again this evening. I did not see anything on it when I looked the first time.

Thanks you for your comment.Yes, the leak is around the axle next to the tire. It is the only place that I seen that has oil on it.

There is a small bubble in the top of the sight glass. It is filled to the top. Should it be a line straight across?

When parked on a level surface the hydraulic fluid should be just slightly higher than half way up the glass. There are a few seals that can leak on the wheels. It is more common to see the front wheels leaking. Be sure to check the level of them. As for adding a thickener. Is it an eHydro if so then it is one sump of hydraulic fluid to thicken it would effect your total performance so it wouldn't be recommended.
Download a copy of the service manual. A search engine will find you several copies for download for $25 or less. 800 pages of how to fix everything. After you review how to do the repair answer the question of can you do it yourself.
