JD 4410
Hello All,

I have been helping my neighbor with his 2005 JD 4410 that will not engage the starter. Here is what we know so far.

1. Turning the key we here the injector solenoid open and the close after about 1 second.
2. Moving the ignition switch to start does not engage the starter.
3. Ignition switch has been replaced.
4. Relays having to do with the starter, PTO, Injector, etc have been replaced.
5. PTO switch has been replaced.
6. Jumping the starter will crank the engine and the engine will run for about 10 second before it shuts down.
7. Seat safety switch is functioning normally.
8. All requirements for starter to be engaged (Brake Set, PTO off, operator in seat, etc) have been completed.

This all started after the battery developed a short in one of the cells.

Diagnostic check returns the following:

1 long light and 8 short lights which indicates the the deck needs to be turned off. There is no deck on this tractor.
1 long light and 9 short lights which indicates that the PTO is engaged. PTO is not engaged and the switch has been replaced.

We can't find anything else in the service manual to check.

Does anyone have any ideas on what we can check or try to resolve these issues?

Thanks in advance,

Randall

Neutral start switch key 18 in the drawing. I am not sure which transmission, or if both transmission options have/use this switch?

I own a 4110, don稚 know if any of this is relevant, but your symptoms sound familiar. Read this, look at the 4410 service manual "theory of operations" section for starting/fuel and compare---if not applicable ignore.

My starting systems numerous inputs/outputs are integrated by a control module located under the seat. It senses all the safety inputs (grounded to start), switch positions, and turns on/off the fuel solenoid. Solenoid take a higher initial voltage to pull it in, then system reduces the voltage to hold it in when the machine is running. When the ignition switch is turned off, the voltage is cut to the fuel solenoid causing the engine to stop.

My control module overheated when my battery went bad. I suspect the charging systems saw the voltage drop and increased output, causing the board to eventually overheat.

I壇 bypassed all my various ignition lockouts, so ran the problem down much like you did. After swapping out fuel relays, fuel solenoid, cleaning all the various ground point I pulled the control module. It had a definite smell to it, not unlike overheated brake pads. Came apart with a few screws; upon inspection the overtemp was apparent.

What is interesting is your condition where if you jump the starter, the tractor will run for 10 seconds then quit. Strong indication the fuel solenoid not staying open. If so, key will be to figure out why. You致e replaced the fuel relay; assuming that痴 good then the solenoid itself might be suspect or something in the electrical system-----something that痴 telling the control box to shut down (open safety switch) or a faulty control box (bad timer, shorted diode, etc). Post #2 is a good example.

Good luck

Search this site, or google search using the word “thermister”, very common problem
