So I am in the process of replacing the LVU17467 seal #33 on the diagram and have the front hub and all the bearings and gears out of the front end. I confused on how to get the two housings apart. There is a nut that is treaded on that i believe needs to be removed to allow me to separate the two housings. Does anyone know how to get these two housings apart so i can replace the seal? Thanks for the help.

Here is the link to the diagram.

Oh and this nut is a spanner nut that will have to be bought or made.

Not sure it's the same seal but you might do a google search. Type in "4310 seal". You'll probably get a link back to this site.

There's been a few threads on this fix. One by azchopper with some pretty good pics and tools needed.

My front knuckle seal is leaking but I'm too chicken to fix it yet.

Here's the verdict.
i replaced the seal LVU17467 seal #33 on the diagram and here is the lowdown.
First loosen up the lug nuts.
lift the front end up till the wheels are off the ground and set on jack stands.
Remove the wheel.
Next use a 10mm socket to remove the hub assembly.
Use a dead blow hammer to tap off the hub once unbolted. be careful because this hub weighs about 30 lbs and will drop in the dirt.
Now you will see an opening on the gear housing left on the tractor.
Use a 1/2" punch to knock out the plug on the bottom of the gear housing.
With this plug removed you now remove the gears and bearings out of the lower assembly.
Now i removed the entire assembly from the main horz. axle housing. 4 bolts that were 15/16" socket size.
I rotated the assembly upside down and removed the next snap ring. You will need a large pair of snap ring pliers to remove this.
With this ring out the vertical shaft will come out with the bearing attached.
Now this is the hard part.
There is a spanner nut that holds the two halves together.
i used a homemade socket to remove the nut.
the two havles fell apart. the seal sits in a cup. to remove i used a large flat head screw driver.
Clean the cup and all parts and reassemble.

A two hour job turned into a two day job with the making of a spanner socket.

Let me know if you have any questions i would be happy to share.

We all appreciate a thorough explanation, so thanks for this. How about a pic of the socket you made?

How about a pic of the socket you made?

Mine looked like this. A piece of schedule 40 pipe with two small welds to grab the
nut, also pictured. I then turned the pipe with a pipe wrench.

This is for an older axle off a 4300.
