I looked at a used John Deere 425 today. It had 200 hours on it and looked in good shape. The owner wants $5500 for it. Is this a good deal? I am going to test drive it on Wednesday - what should I look out for/ any particular problems with this model.

I don't know about all 425's, but I know about mine.

I've put about 100 hours on mine so far, with one problem. The PTO doesn't like to engage in cool weather. I have to lower the engine RPM's when I try to engage the pto for the first time of the day.

I've had the solenoid valve replaced, as well as the housing that the valve seats into, with only minor improvement.

Water gets into the instrument cluster, and clouds the glass up.

I'd buy another one - overall, it's a solid machine.

I have 2 425 JD tractors both 96 models. One I bought as is for $1600 had minor issue's but later had to replace the oil pump gear.which was a winter project. It runs fine now. Has 1300 hrs. The other had less than 300 hrs. and cost $3500 and it looks like new. If you search the for sale adds on Tractorhouse.com the prices are all over the place depending on hours and condition.

Ha, the original post is 17 years old. It probably wasn't high at the time.
