John Deere 4200 4x4

I have a JD 4200 tractor and it sounds like a constant air leak, like come out of a tire, but it's not any tire. It only happens when the tractor is running and it loses power just going up an incline. It's a hydrostatic model about the year 2000 or 2001. I have run my hands all around the tubes, trying to feel any air movement.

May be a gasket on the motor.Losing power,any of the tires look like they are going down.?If checking tires ,mix up a spray bottle with water and dish detergent and spray around the tires ,look for bubbles.

First thing that comes to mind is to check the exhaust manifold for cracks or bad gaskets. Or the fuel cap for a plugged breather.

It only makes the noise when the tractor is running. No sound of air when it is off.

Exhaust leak or intake air leak at the filter or manifold.

Get a tube, (2-3 feet long) put one end to your ear, use the other end to listen at various spots. Be very careful of the moving belts, fan, etc. Tie your hair back, button loose sleeves, take off rings, chains & bracelets... You are working around moving parts. Don't get sucked in.

Does it have the Power Beyond option installed, like to power a backhoe or log splitter? I suspect what you are hearing is the pressure relief valve activating indicating blocked hydraulic flow.

That sounds like a good idea, I will give hat a try, because when the engine is running it is hard to pin point.
