John Deere 420 L&G points adjust

Just purchased a 420 w/the B48g engine. It is running like it is too rich. I cannot find the "fuel " screw on the carb, just the air mixture screw I believe. I've read elsewhere people with the same problem have adjusted the points and it solves the prob. Here are my symptoms-idles just fine with no choke, the more throttle you give the more it starts spitting and sputtering. Before, if you gave it about half choke, it would clear up. But it seems to be getting worse. Any help would be appreciated. How do you adjust points? Thanks

I have had the same issue with my 318 and 420 which both have a onan engin in them. Resolved the problems on both tractors by cleaning the carb. I have been able to fix both of mine by removing just the top of the carb and cleaning all the jets with carb cleaner and air hose. Then cleaning the bowl with a clean rag. Also make sure the supply of fuel to the carb is enough. If has a good fuel supply when you take the top of the carb off look at the amount of fuel in the bowl. Should be about half full. Plus make sure the fuel filter is clean. No sense in cleaning a carb while the filter is still dirty.

Hey thanks. I found the points were a little off and the carb looks like it needs cleaned. I will take your advice and get the carb cleaned and she'll be ready to roll. Thanks again.
