John Deere 4100 tractor.......looking for some general info on them.

I agree with those who say keep it as it is and try it out. It may be able to move small round bales with a 3pt bale fork. I would not get a loader for this tractor and use it for heavy lifting (like small round bales) because it has an undersized front axle for that work. The weight rating is published by John deer as ~1000 pounds. Put the factory loader on it and it is at its rated limit before you pick anything up.
Keep the 4100 as is and get an older fame tractor for the heavy stuff.

The 4100 is a little bigger hp version of the 4010 I had that was trouble-free for 9 years and 660 hours when the driveline donut between the engine and the hydro blew apart. Think that was due to the very abrupt startup of the PTO. Don't know whether the 4100 had a little more attenuated PTO startup like is on my 2025 or not. The 2025 is the best tractor I've had. Only had it since last July though.
Very definitely would get the 410 FEL. Can't see running one of these tractors without a loader.
I do not recommend the 1025R. I had numerous warranty issues with it, and its FEL control was tricky, and the engine was very rough and idles extremely fast (and cannot be changed). The 1025 has a very smooth, gentle startup of the PTO though.

I've had a 4100 with the factory loader since 2000. My place is only 5 acres and I use the 4100 to mow, move crushed rock, blade snow, box blade, and dig post holes.
I use the 4' Deere bush hog I bought with the tractor as well as a Land Pride 60" finish mower. It's not under powered for my use and in my mind a bigger tractor would be less convenient for mowing.
Keep the 4100 and use it for mowing and other tasks within it's capabilities.
