i have a john deere 40 i bought that looks great but clutch is making noise unless i depress clutch, then noise goes away. does anyone have any experiance in rebuilding the clutch in a classic tractor like this??

I don't have experience with the 40. But a normal situation I would say the throw out bearing is bad. Are you talking about a two cylinder 40?

yes an old 1954 jd 40 - i'm an oil, and gas ONLY kinda guy, but i can follow a manual. does a repair book exist to fix clutch issue

The books are out there. Try Jensales. The pilot and throwout bearings probably need replacing. Do both while you have the tractor split. I replaced both on my 420 crawler which is almost an identicle setup to yours. For a few more dollars you may want to have the flywheel turned flat and replace the clutch. You dont want to split the tractor twice, unless of course you like to!
