Tractor
John Deere 5225
Looking for something with a hydro transmission to primarily run a 5ft brush cutter and a 6ft finish mower with some grapple work on a front end loader. I grew up on a Deeres and still have my dad's JD 5025 so I'm leaning that way but the Massey guy makes a great pitch. Would love a little feed back, particularly on the Massey, can't seem to find much on that tractor.

Also.... this is my first post here.... so greetings.... I grew up on a farm, went to school so I wouldn't have to farm, now at 50 years old I'm getting back to my roots. Dad can't take care of the place anymore so I'm looking for something to keep things mowed. The 5025 is a little too big and I want something more agile.

Welcome.. Are both the Massey and the Deere dealers close by? I like both of those models, how do they compare price wise?

As a recent new member myself, welcome to the site. You don't mention location. Is snow removal part of the chores? Just bought a new 1742 cab tractor last winter.
Does a good job with the bush hog. Also use a verge mower, land plane, front blade and rear blower. Love the tractor. Been a city boy all my life, now at 67, moved to an acreage.

Southeastern NC so snow blowing is not something I worry about. The only thing that will ever go on the front end of this tractor would be a bucket, grapple, and maybe some forks.

As for dealer proximity, JD is about 30min and the Massey is about 45min.

The Massey is a little cheaper but not by a lot. Enough to make me look at it when all I know is Deere, but not enough to make me get it if the JD is a better tractor.

Spec wise the Massey has a slight advantage but personally I like the Deere a little better but that's just me..

I have a 1734e, and looked at the 3032e as well before I purchased. The Massey weights about 400 lbs more, has a few more PTO hp, a 10 gallon tank vs 6.4 on the Deere. Loader and 3 pt are about the same. It has been 100% reliable for me. I run a 6ft rotary cutter with mine, and a 6 ft box blade. It handles both well. The Massey was about $2000 less between dealers.

Think I have decided against both. The Kubota L3901 has got my attention and I'm now trying to decide between the L3901 and a Kioti CK4010.

If I could do it over again, I would have spent an extra $3500 for the 1736 premium. Larger tires, heavier, suspension seat, foot throttle, 1 remote, and a loader with about 700 lbs more lift capacity among other things.

In my opinion, owning both the previous JD-750 and JD-950, this iteration of a John Deere compact is a travesty. Aluminum gear housing, plastic hood, fenders and floor boards and you get to pay just as much or more for a tractor built less substantially. Only advantage is lighter weight for things like mowing. What you knew and what is now are apples and oranges. Yanmar engine is still a big plus however.
