John Deere 2950 fuel problem

What would cause or allow air to get into the fuel supply line that goes into the lower right side of the fuel filter? It's not constant, but when it happens, it causes the engine to smoke and stall.

Is it a rubber line? If old it can develope leaks that let it suck air.

No, it's a ridged line.

Metal fuel lines from tank have been known to get pin holes in them allowing air to enter fuel system.
