John Deere 245 spindle repair

I'm working on a JD 245 Garden Tractor that's about 30 years old. I took the deck spindles apart to change out the ball bearings and there was so much grease in there I didn't realize the spacers, part M110008, have slots on one side. One spacer is on the top of the spindle and one is on the bottom. I need to know which way the slotted sides face before I reassemble. See photos for details. Thanks in advance for any help.

Most likely upwards. The slots are to aid you in removing it
