John Deere 2440
My Grandpa has a John Deere 2440 at his place that doesnt get used all that much anymore. I want to start using it almost full time this spring for plowing, tilling, and other chores and i dont want to blow the thing up because its been sitting. What are some things I should do to make sure it's in good running condition?

Can you give us the amount of hrs on the 2440, the last time it was service, what was done on it and how many hours since? This info. will help us to give you an idea to what should be done.

Not positive but it cant be too far over 5000 hours. I dont remember grandpa ever having to make any serious repairs on it. We used it once last spring to move some brush but that's been it. I started it up a couple times to let it run. I did have to charge the battery once to start it. I dont remember the last time the oil was changed so i plan on doing that. What else?

Go ahead and change all the fluids and filters. As I recall the 2440 is very similar to a 2550 which we have. The fuel filter is a glass cube shaped unit and you replace the whole thing, the fuel system will have to be bled afterward, but it isn't too difficult. You'll also want to change the hydraulic filter which is a cartridge type that comes out under the tractor. Use only JD Hy-Gard hydraulic fluid, these tractors are sensitive to bad quality/cheap fluid, we used some off brand stuff and it ate all the seals out of the hydraulic system within a few weeks. I think it will take about 10gal of hydraulic fluid to change it. Engine oil and filter of course, we always use JD filters and Plus 50 engine oil, but any good filter and 15w40 oil will work fine. Lastly be sure to grease everything real well, these tractors have about 15 grease fittings on them.

Thanks. Another question.. Would the 2440 be able to handle a 4 bottom plow with 60 hp?

Depends on a lot of factors, (soil, depth, type of plow, etc) a 4-14" bottom plow might be doable, I don't think you'd have much luck with a 4-16" bottom. We pull a 3-16" bottom plow with out 2550 and it's a pretty good match.

Check the air filter and the hoses for splits cracks. If it has the fitting for ether starting aid, check that it's capped and the tubing for it is not broken.
Check radiator for dirt/clogged fins. Flush cooling system.
