I suppose I could 'google' this question, but I might as well as the expert:

what's the difference between using your tiller and using your 54" disc? Does the disc break up the ground and the tiller make mince-meat out of the dirt? Couldn't you get by with the tiller alone? I've only used a walk-behind tilller...

If you have a well established garden, you might get away with tilling alone, but the disc will soften things up a bit for the tiller to do a better job.

Jim In Ga Thats exactly the way I do it disc It First Then Till Then I will Disc again at the end of the month ! & the Till again ! I will planting Yukon gold potatoes in March I already Got Got my 3 rows of Sweet Texas Onions In the Ground ! & I put 10-10-10 fertilizer down already also !
