That's an '80's tractor with hyd. wet brakes ?

I'd be worried it is more than the brakes, but without more definitive info from you, wouldn't be able to venture a guess. Maybe others will come to the rescue.

I've heard using the wrong trans/hydraulic oil can cause the brake linings to be ruined.

Thanks for the answers.

Yes wet brakes it as locked up a few times after a drive of a few miles not doing it all the time maybe 3 times in as many weeks but will release its self after a few minutes.

Regards
Brendan

Another question.
If "locked up" means the wheels stop, then does just sitting still for a few minutes cause them to release? Does trying to go in reverse help any?

Or does "locked up" mean that something is dragging, and slowing down the tractor for a few minutes of driving time?

Do they "lock up" without touching the brake pedals, and do both brakes lock up evenly?
If not evenly, then one wheel would seemingly spin or you would/try-to go in circles.

If I lock up one brake, then that wheel will drag down the road/path.

Does it make a difference if in 4wd or not?

I'm thinking this isn't a brake problem. Convince me why you think it is. :)

Yes the two back wheel drag the road at the same time as if you put you foot on the brakes hard but then will release after a few minutes.

Seems odd to me that both brakes work together in this drag effect. I believe the linkage is independent from the brake pedal back to the left/right axles, so to speak. But there is a brake valve where the right left brakes are activated, so maybe that is a place to look for this dual effect. One pic shows the brakes and the valve (dotted) and the other the valve. There is a brake valve kit with o-rings and such, so maybe there is some wear and tear that this valve needs. That I don't know.

Regards the 4wd being engaged or not while this happens....what you say?

4wd is not ingaged the brakes are hyd. they are feed from the return oil of the steering motor when you press the pedal this feed the brake piston.

If they release after a few minutes, I almost has to be in the brake valve/master cylinder.

The return oil from steering does fill the brake reservoir, but at very low pressure. I can't imagine a brake valve making pressure on it's own. Maybe you've got a diff lock valve leaking past and trying to lock your diff at speed. I never tried to engage diff lock in motion (manual says not to). Is there a noise like maybe a gear binding up? What transmission?
