John Deere 2025 into the pond....

Saw this on Youtube today. Apparently it happened about 3 days prior to me posting it. He was fortunate, no injury and the tractor seems to be ok.

That looked like it might have been a little hard on the loader but not as hard as breaking through the ice.

The rule of thumb I learned is wait to drive on the ice until two weeks after the last story in the local paper of someone's vehicle falling through the ice.

As kids my grandfather drilled through our lake ice and a foot thick said it was ok to skate on. Then he had a skating pond put in on other side of dam about 80ft square. It was just 18" deep. He filled it from lake overflow and pipe. We enjoyed that.

I wait a bit longer than that. The last time I drove a vehicle other than my snowsled on ice was somewhere around 1982.

My prior NH house was at the end of a small lake. I had a 12inch drill bit to poke a hole . I then had a straightened out coat hanger I’d pop through the hole to determine how thick it was. When it was safe , it was time to fire up the sled. It’s good to know what you’re dealing with.
