In their day they were a good machine. I believe that model used a Kuhn disc bar but I could be wrong on that. I'm not sure when Deere started making their own.
I know a few people that had them and liked them. Now one issue I believe that is also a bear to repair. Seems when something did break with the disc bar the whole unit had to be pulled and taken apart and even back 20 years ago it was 5-6K for repairs.

That's good to hear, the dealer said it could use new discs but said the ones on there will still cut.
Is it easy to repair for someone who is mechanically inclined?
It's more about the newer cutter bars are built in sections and the disks are made to break and save the cutter bar. The older ones were more of a one piece design and if something broke it was usually inside the gear case and would damage the whole unit. I know a few guys that had them back in the early 1990's and like the newer ones much better.

This here is a 920 cutter bar which is built in sections. Much easier to repair and possibly much less damage will be done if you hit a hard object.

Now with both if a gear breaks it's going to probably damage the whole unit, but a newer one will still be easier to repair.
Both can be fixed, its just a lot easier to repair a newer than an older.
