I would not use plexiglass, I would use polycarbonate (lexan) 3/8" or 1/2". It won't shatter and is used in some application to make things bullet resistant (at thicker levels). We use it at work to guard machinery if tooling breaks. We use only the 1/2 material for our applications.

Yes very true lexan is safer and we've used them for guards on some machinery and the 1/2 can really take a beating.
