We've got a 1985 John Deere 850 with a 75 loader, but my dad's "Holy Grail" tractor is a 1050. We found a 1985 JD 1050 for sale with an 80 loader and not only does it look more rugged and stout than the 75, the spec sheet also shows this, too. Except for one important category: lift capacity. The 75 is rated at 950lbs. while the 80 is rated for 910lbs.

That doesn't make any sense. Isn't the 80 an upgrade over the 75? Why would it have less lift?

Any thoughts or insight is appreciated. Just for kicks, here's our 850:

Where did you see the loader rating in a JD owners manual or Tractor Data?
I have also seen some similar questionable loader ratings where the higher number or larger loader was rated lower a few times on Tractor Data. If Tractor data uses actual tests, sometimes the test tractor may be one that doesn’t perform as well as it should.

Also, did you make sure the ratings were at the same point on the loader? Pin? or 800mm?

So heres pictures of both tests. Indeed the 850 tested at 950 with a 75 loader and the 1050 tested at 910 with the 80 loader. Now the question is, was that an actual test? Or is it a reprint of the JD specs?

This leaves my dad in a quandary because while he wants a 1050, he doesn't want to sacrifice loader lift capacity. It's bass ackward if you think about it. A 1050 is a fair amount more tractor than an 850 and an 80 loader is a bit more stout than a 75...but his little 850 will outlift the bigger 1050.

Makes no sense.

I wouldn’t worry small numbers on loader specs if the tractor is otherwise what you want.

The 80 is a different design than the 75. Design can/will make a difference. This is not a huge difference, but may help to get pics of both the 75 and the 80 to be able to tell how the design is different. Probably is due to the attachment to the tractor and the limitations.
