Hello, I have a new Jinma 284LE with 10 hours on it. Generally speaking, the tractor runs fine, but the temperature gauge is running at the "green/red" line after about 20 min. I'm located in Texas (Dalllas area) and the temperature outside is 90 Deg F. Is this a normal operating temp for the tractor? On cooler days I stay in the green area.
Thanks for all your help

Most engines will run a little warmer on hot days.....how much?? good question. If you haven't already??? My thoughts would be to try and determine if it is truley running hotter or is my gauge telling me the truth? Some basic checks would be, Proper air flow threw radiator, Coolant level , Coolant flow in radiator, Thermostat operation, etc. The cooling system has to be capable of keeping it at operating temp. I guess one question would be.... are you having to add coolant?

Not sure where the red green line is,,,mine runs about 170 to 180 degrees f,,[if I remember right],,when working out in about that temp,[hardly ever work it when its that hot,,,although its been in the 90's here in wva,,for past 4-5 days now..
I would first make sure its got plenty of coolant and you don't want to rich a mix,[more than about a 50 -50,,, 60 - 40 mix,antifreeze/water],,than I would get one of those long airguns and blow raditiator out good with air compressor,,starting from back,,and look at raditiator openings and make sure you can see through it,,air has got to pass through raditiator,,,,,,than you could check your fan and belt and make sure all that stuff is working good,,,,one other thought,,,mine [a 254] doesn't have a tach,,,so I got to go by sound and feel when brushoging or tilling,,,have learned that you don't need to give it more than about 3/4 throttle to cut and till,,,,more rpm's you are running,,more heat you are making,,,,,course if you need it,,crank it up,,but alot of the time when I'm mowing,,,don't have it much more than 1/2 throttle,,,,just a thought there,,,,thingy

I would be suspicious of the sending unit. If the thermostate were sticking, it would overheat on any day.

Just as a tid bit.... A Thermostat can go bad and not cause a motor to over heat everday. It does not have to be stuck closed......which would cause it to over heat all day.

It can stick and not close all the way......which will not allow the water to stay in the radiator long enough to cool.......to get ready for the next cycle.

A couple of additional things to check/try, especially if this was a crate or self-import tractor:

- Check fan to shroud clearance. The fan blades should be centered in the shroud hole, but recessed toward the radiator. Adjustment is via the lower radiator mounts and adj rod on engine. Height is via thick rubber washers under the radiator over the mounting bolts. ( I assume LE is the same as older style here)

- Flush the radiator and engine. Common for a lot of sand/scale to come from factory. Best way to do the engine, requires pulling T-stat. Radiator is easy. Pull bottom hose. Flush from top, until water leaving is clear. I use a pre-charge diesel anti-freeze.

Cleaning the radiator as already mentioned is the most common solution so start there and work through the other suggestions. You did not mention if there was any loss of fluid? I have had one problem of fluid loss caused by a leaky head casket. The diagnosis was confirmed simply by observing the bubbling going on with engine running and visually looking into the filler cavity. Get one of those long air guns from harbor freight and blow the radiator out thoroughly from the inside out. I just did mine the other day and am amazed at the amount of seed and dirt removed! The operating temp dropped ten degrees immediately.

In addition to the above standard fare, an airflow conflict exists in those Jinmas with the air filter housing mounted forward of the radiator. Diesel intake is so voracious, that it can create negative pressure and turbulence in front of the radiator.

Your size may vary, but I used a 34" section of two inch suction hose (so the intake doesn't collapse it) with one end over the breather housing intake pipe and the other end along the side of the fuel tank. Sucked in nice cool air from down around my left knee. Was actually too cool-running in the winter time. A 28" section of suction hose drawing warm air from over the exhaust manifold fixed that.

Can you post what activities you have done with the 10 hours of operation? If you were mowing, that might lead us toward a plugged radiator vs some initial/new tractor/bad part/set-up type problem. Where you running the pto when it went into the red? The more info we have, the easier it is to pinpoint. I am assuming you have the recessed battery as well.

Thanks eveyone for all the advise. I was on the tractor last evening mowing antd the temperature was running hot again then all of a sudden the temperature dropped and stayed there. I guess I need a new thermostat, but seems odd being so new. THanks again everyone.
