I've watched this forum for a while, seen the vast knowledge that you all have on here, so I'm hoping someone can help me. My tractor has only 40 hours on it and until this leak, haven't had a bit of trouble. I just identified the part from one of the books as the "respirator." When I start the tractor, oil just pours out from the bottom of the respirator. From the respirator cannister, there is a solid tube that connects to the block and a small open ended tube, approximately 1 1/2" long. It almost looks as though a hose would be connected to this, but after checking thoroughly, I didn't find where this might be connected to.

What function does the respirator have and why would it be leaking? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

That part is also known as a crankcase breather. It's function is to allow air into the crankcase which is then sucked out through the hose attached to the oil filler cap. this hose connects to the intake manifold and the vacume on the intake manifold keeps a flow of air through the crankcase. This keeps unburnt diesel fumes in the crankcase from building up to the point where they could ignite(crankcase explosion).

As I said air should go in, oil should not come out. How much oil is showing on the dipstick? The only failure that I could think of that might raise the oil level is if the hydraulic pump shaft seal failed and the pump is adding hydraulic fluid to the front gearcase/engine raising the level above the point where the Respirator is attached to the block. I guess a block/head/gasket failure could potentially add coolant to the oil and raise it's level but the oil comming out would look pretty nasty and you didn't mention that.

It's a simple crankcase breather, and is probably dirty and/or full of water. If it's foaming out milky stuff, it's definitely taken on water. Remove the top, remove the filter element. Clean element/housing/top, dry everything, then reassemble. See if that resolves your issue.
