In the back of my mind, I've been thinking about how nice it would be to have a vegetable cleaning table by the garden. I've been saving this stainless steel sink from a long ago kitchen remodel and I think it will work well for this purpose. A cousin gave me an old tabletop. A set of table legs from the tool store and..........

Don

Don, I've bought several of the new lightweight tables and have two or three of the old heavy particle board top tables like yours. That's a great idea if you can stop water from getting to the particle board. A good edge sealing ought to do it. I guess you could use galvanized corrugated iron on top of a wood frame too. The advantage there would be that your veggies don't tend to roll off your table.

You gotta quit showing your great ideas. I now have several round-tuit projects due to things you've posted.:)

When I mentioned wanting a vegetable cleaning sink near the garden, a neighbor told me had a double galvanized deep commercial sink with legs that came out of a commercial kitchen when they replaced it with stainless steel and he had no use for it. Now I didn't get nearly as nice and fancy; just set it by the water hydrant and hose by the garden and put 5 gallon buckets under the drains, but it served the purpose.

we had a similar (ok...not nearly as pretty) set-up when we used to raise and slaughter and clean broilers. the drain just ran out onto the ground under the sink. we hooked a garden hose up to the faucet. for a while after we got tired of killing chickens we used it for washing maters before cooking them.
my set-up has been put to shame.

Nice addition to the garden. Do you wish you had gone with larger wheels/tires to make it easier to roll around in the grass?

Thanks, The dolly wheels are 3"(probably look smaller in the grass) and seem to roll fine. I borrowed the wheels from another project (in progress) so I could easily change them out to larger wheels but, so far so good.

galvanized corrugated iron ..........now we talkin' real heavy. I set the sink about 4" back from the front edge to hopefully keep the water back from the edge of the table. The table top is 1 inch thick particle board and is quite heavy....however, I could not argue with free.:)

So the question now is: Do you bring the garden to the kitchen or bring the kitchen to the garden? Yesterday was a beautiful sunny 80 degree day. We multi-tasked the new sink and set up the outdoor grillin' station next to the garden. We harvested tomatoes, multiple varities of leaf lettuce, onions, radishes, celery, kohlrobi, green peppers, sweet banana peppers, green beans, red potatoes & zucchini. Also picked up a dozen ear of corn from a local large scale farm. Added some Chicken Breasts and Chicken Asiago Sausage to complete the garden fest. Our first garden cookout of the season...mmm good.

A way to bring hot water to the sink came to mind. Since the hose lays out in the sun and the hot water needs to be purged to get to the cool water, why not hook up a second hose and attach it to the hot water side of the faucet? The hot water would only be limited by the length of hose laying out in the sun.

Don

Edit: Mouth watering Cucumbers too! :)

Don, that does look like the makin's of a fine party, and of course I'm familiar with most of that stuff; however, I don't recall hearing of, or knowing about, "kohlrobi" or "Chicken Asiago Sausage". What are they?

Chicken Asiago Sausage is made with:Chicken, Asiago Cheese & Spinach.
Kohlrabi(corrected spelling) grows above ground but reminds me more of a root vegetable. We diced it up and added it to the salad or it's good to just snack on.

Since a picture is worth a thousand words.... Don't laugh but it was faster to take one picture and combine the sausage and Kohlrabi. ....and no, the sausage does not grow in the garden. :p

Well, that's one vegetable and one kind of sausage that I don't think I've ever seen before.

My wife's family has grown and eaten kohlrabi for years. I had never heard of it before, and neither had my grandpa, who's gardened all his life. I've only ever eaten it raw or (one time) battered and fried. I've heard it compared to a turnip in flavor, but I don't have much turnip experience so I can't say. It's really a pretty bland 'vegetabley' flavor. I've seen my wife pick them from the garden, bite the skin off, and eat it like an apple before. She's kinda weird though, so I wouldn't necessarily recommend that preparation.

Shawn, if you look at the numbers of turnips in the grocery store, it appears that they aren't too popular, and we don't have them very often, but I sure am fond of them myself; diced along with the greens, sliced and stewed with butter and salt and pepper, turnip/potato soup (my personal favorite), or fried.
