Jim, I have to thin also. Is there a method to your madness, or do you cut wherever you need to?

I'm sitting here in my office looking out at the driving rainstorm and thinking, after looking at these beautiful gardens I think I'll just brush hog ours when it dries up.

Between working on the new house and rain we have let it grow up to an unrecognizable condition. Still getting big onions out, if we can find them, but I'm not sure where the tomatoes and peppers are.

You are NOT hijacking my thread. I misnamed it anyhow. It should have been "Jim wants you to show your garden pictures" thread. I never meant for this to be my own, although it sounds like it in the title.

Your squash looks terrific. Ours has had some bug problems, but spraying has been sufficient to kill the bugs so far. I do need to weed in a few places though.

AlanL: If I had just built a beautiful house like yours, the last thing I would be worrying about is the garden. Next year you will have time to worry about that. For this year, just revel in the satisfaction of completing a life-long dream.:) If I were closer, I'd give you all the stuff you could eat and more...kinda a house warming gift.;)

Don, that looks like a Porter tomato or a small Roma variety. My Porter's are the most prolific producers, but they are pinkish rather than red and they don't have the flavor of other varieties.

They're Grape tomatoes. Just about the size of a grape. Except for a meatier texture.......I think they could almost be disquised as a real grape. I'm not familiar with Porters although I do have a few Roma's planted. The Roma's got a slow start, caught a fungus. I thought they were goners. I nurtured them along and they are now on the rebound with lots of new growth.

Jim, the garden looked good about the beginning of May and thats when we lost control of it. But, like you say the house is a one time deal so we'll do better next year.

Right now I can't even mow and even the back "yard" from the back porch down to the creek is 3 feet tall. Mrs. Alan L. got a pic of a bobcat today no more than 20 feet from the porch. He though he was hid.

No, it's mostly madness...;)

Actually, in the cages, the limbs and leaves at the bottom of the plant get very thick. I just thin until I can see into the center of the cage. It's also good to remove the very bottom branches and leaves to reduce the chance of fungus growing. My problem is that I have to fight with the plants just to walk down the rows. The weather has made everything go crazy. If you were to see my plants right now, you would never think they have been thinned. My wife used to pick suckers everytime we went to the garden, but she just finally gave it up. She couldn't keep up with them.

...and my poor peppers are planted between tomato rows. They don't know if it's day or night because of the shade. Sheesh!

Aha!...you are a clever fellow, Don. You took that picture close up and I thought they were much larger than grape tomatoes. I tried to grow grape tomatoes last year and they burned up. So, this year I didn't even try, and it would have been the perfect year for them. Go figure.
