I planted Basil as a companion plant to my tomatos this year, supposed to repel bugs, especially aphids, plus I just like to smell the stuff. My tomatos this year are the tastiest I've ever eaten and I swear they have a hint of the Basil's pungency in them. No skeeters in my garden either?!?

The garden here in Southwest PA is doing great. Just wanted to post some pictures to update the progress.

We have been picking Peas, Zuchinni, Yellow Squash, Scallop squash, Brocolli, Cabbage, Caulifower, Beets, Peppers and Beans. We did pick a couple ripe cherry tomatoes. The real ones should be coming soon. Also the corn is getting ears.

Ray, your stuff really overwhelms those raised beds in a hurry, doesn't it? You really have some healthy, happy plants. Heck, even the Virginia creeper on a tree behind your greenhouse looks healthy.;)

I'm jealous of your corn, but I just won't bother with it when I can get great corn at Wal*Mart for 7 ears for $1.00. It's not worth fighting the worms and 'coons to try and grow it here, but yours looks great.

I love the last picture with the bench over by the trees. If that garden was mine, I think you'd find me there just watchin' my stuff grow and drinkin' a cool one. :)

Jim,

Thanks for your kind words.

Yes, the raised beds do fill up in a hurry. My wife has a hard time visualizing how big stuff is going to get. My wife just came home with some local farm grown sweet corn $6.50 PER DOZEN!!!

Dang, our Wal*Mart is 3 ears for $.99.:( And we've gotten very good corn in the past from Wal*Mart, but the last ones were pretty tough kernels.

Bird, I was shocked last Sunday to find the 7 for a dollar corn. It had been 3 for a dollar as you say, but I went in to get some milk and juice for my grandkids and there was the corn. I ended up buying 49 ears and only spent $7. About 35 ears of that was cooked on the 4th for our Kaboom! celebration. It was tender and sweet. I'm sorry the same corn hasn't made it to your Wal*Mart yet. We are freezing the uncooked ears for use over the next few weeks.

Jim,

How do you freeze your corn? We usually blanch it and then cut the kernels off the cob and put in freezer bags. Some have told me that they freeze the ears whole in the husk. This may take up a little more frezzer room than I have available.

Ray, many years ago, when we had a big freezer, we bought a bunch of corn at the Farmer's Market and put them in the freezer still in the husks. That worked just fine except for the huge amount of space they took. And there was a time when we shucked them, blanched them, and then froze them, but later decided the blanching was a real waste of time. My wife really likes the "corn on the cob" but my favorite is to just cut the kernels off, scrape the cob then throw it away, and put the cut corn in the freezer bags and freeze it. Then when we cook it, of course, we add a little salt, pepper, and butter.

Last year, we just shucked it and did a quick 1 minute blanch before vacuum sealing the corn on the cobs. We don't do much, so it doesn't take up too much space. Our freezer is mostly full of okra, peas, squash, beans, and frozen soup. We don't have much room to spare either.
