I have an '86 JD650 diesel tractor, and I recently had to purchase a new alternator for it. I bought an aftermarket alternator, but just like the original one, both of the wires coming out of it are the same color (blue), as are the ones connected to the tractor (black, I believe) that the alternator hooks up to. Anyone know how to determine the appropriate connections of the two wires? Thanks a bunch. - smiles

if it's 2 wires.. is this a unit that simply makes AC that is externaly rectified and regulated.

.. and if ac=yes.. then which wire won't matter..

Thanks, Soundguy. It is only two wires. The new alternator has the wire ends in a plastic fitting that should have a mate fitting on my tractor, but on my old set-up there are only two wires without plastic fittings. I've learned that it is common for those fittings to rot from sun exposure on these tractors, so many others have had to fix their situation. However, you are so far the only one to offer help on the wiring, so thanks a bunch. - Smiles

With the wires disconnected. Run the yrs to at idle with an ac setting on your volt meter capable of at least 30vac and see what you get.
Short duration test only.
