Has anyone changed one before? is it something I can do myself? My steering works great to the left but is sluggish and weak to the right. guy I bought the tractor off said to buy a rebuilt steering valve and swap it out.

Any thoughts?

:confused3:

My haying buddy is replacing/rebuilding the steering valve on his 3010. He said it's been something that has needed to be done and he's put off... and he's very handy at doing everything on his 4 JD tractors, 2 JD balers and JD disc mower/conditioner. He swapped his 245 loader out and mounted it on his 2640. With the loader off - he jumped on the steering job.

Told me the steering pump and valve assembly weighs about 170lbs on his 3010. And it's not in a real easy location to access and wrestle that hummer outta there!

Much depends upon your experience and your shop/equipment and your friends that can lend a hand!!

You'll definitely save money - likely won't save time - and you'll learn as you go!

I'm only going on what Jim told me.. Maybe he's taking in account the steering wheel, etc. - the whole enchilada.

He did say that he had to use his overhead hoist to pull everthing out.

That is a pretty spendy item as well.... Whatdya suppose shipping would be to Fort St. John, BC, Canada?

I feel sure you could get your valve rebuilt for less than $990. There usually aren't too many expensive parts that needs replacing unless you have cracked or broken housings. Typical rebuild after valve is out is about 4-5 hours labor. A seal kit costs less than $100. Usually the valves can reseated and adjusted. Removing the steering valve isn't too difficult. Removing the steering wheel is usually the toughest part. Then unhook throttle linkage, wiring to dash, tach cable then lift off the dash. Then unhook all the oil lines and remove the four mounting bolts to lift it out. 64 pounds sounds right. Definitely less than 100 pounds. It is clumsy though.

The steering wheel and associated parts doesn't weight close to 90#s extra plus to easily remove steering valve one needs to remove steering wheel so dash can be removed for easier access to valve mounting bolts & hyd lines.
