JD3320 400 Hour Service

The 400 hour service of my JD 3320 will be due late summer or fall of this year. I have already purchased a filter kit, two 5 gal pails of Low-Vis hydraulic oil, 5 qts of 15w40 motor oil, and a gallon of anti-freeze. My question concerns the inline hydraulic filters. The owner's manual says to check and clean the inline filters at 1200 hours, but I can't see putting new fluids in without also doing what appears to be a simple task. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Also the service manual says to replace the o-rings and gaskets on the filters when you clean them. I see a kit for the inline filter at the rear of the tractor on jdparts, but not one for the inline filter near the engine. They do show some o-rings but no gasket for the front filter. The filters are different part numbers so I guess the internals are somewhat different (or maybe not). Do I need the new parts or just put it back together and hope for the best?

I would just go with putting it back together. I believe KillerBee, (his name is something like that), at his 50 hr service just took the inline filter apart, cleaned it, and then put it back together. There's a thread on his experience with that if you want to take a look for it.

The suction strainer I clean with solvent and inspect for damage. All other replaceable filters I change at the same time I change the oil. Filters are cheap, hydraulic system damage isn't.

My 1983 S-10 pickup's manual recommended the oil filter be changed every other oil change. I changed the filter with every 5,000 mile oil change. I got 100,000 miles out of that crappy 2.8-liter V6 engine, while numerous people had them blow up between 30,000 and 40,000 miles. The garage I took it to for service was amazed that I got that many miles out of that engine.

I agree with you on doing a complete filter service if you're going to change out all the hydraulic fluid. (And.. isn't the 3320 the "king" of the hyd filter prices in the 3-4000 series at around $85!?!) That's about $20 more than I pay for both hyd filters on my JD 110!

I believe the sump filter is just a fine mesh stainless steel filter that you brush out with solvent and compressed air to clean. Unless you have a hole or tear in the screen mesh on the filter - you shouldn't have to replace it - just clean and re-install.

The O-ring gaskets on the "charge" and "sump" hydraulic in-line filters on my 110 are removeable and replaceable. I'd assume that's similar to your in-line hyd filter for the 3320. Fit it into the groove and lightly oil and install.

Unless the O-rings have been damaged or they already leak - you shouldn't have to replace them unless you just want to.
