Hello,

I never thought I would be posting about my old 2305, but I now have to. Earlier this spring I sold my 13 year old 2305 to my neighbor, and now the first time he went out to mow with it the PTO will not engage. I am looking for any info that might shed some light on why the PTO won't engage. I have checked with attachments off and neither the mid nor rear PTO wants to start. The tractor was in neutral and the park break on. When I put the PTO into the rear setting the rear PTO is firmly in place, and spins easily when the PTO is set for mid only. My first inclination was that we have an electrical issue that is not engaging the PTO clutch. I called the dealer and they stated that it sounded like a "hard failure and the clutch might need replacing. I find this a bit suspicious as the PTO spins just fine when not in gear.

I sincerely appreciate any and all input I can get,

I was reading about it on another forum, one guy had the same problem- said it was a fuze to the switch. He stated to engage the pto then take weight off the seat. If the tractor dies, the switch has power and it’s most likely the solenoid that’s bad. Just repeating... mines a 2010, sounds a little different than a 2013. I don’t have a light on the dash when the PTO is engaged. Be interested to find out what is is/was.

Wvantti,

Thanks for the reply. I, too read about the possibility of the solenoid being bad. We did check the fuses and they were all good, so that makes the solenoid seem all the more likely. Actually this tractor is a 2005 (13 yrs old), so I bet that they are actually pretty similar. I will definitely pass this info on to my neighbor.

Thanks again,

Problem SOLVED!!

It turns out this potentially disastrous malfunction was a very simple fix. The Solenoid was simply stuck. With about 3 taps of a hammer to screwdriver to solenoid from the rear and the PTO started working again. It had not been run in about 6-8 months and it likely just froze up. This turned out to be a simple, no-money fix.

Thanks for the update. I was thinking electrical, seat switch solenoid, connector loose/off, chewed/broken wires.
