JD140 H3 trans leak

I am looking at a JD140 H3 with a small leak, I assume it is from the trans.
(The seller believes it to be from the trans.)

How hard is it to fix the leak? What could be other causes/fixes?

"hard" isn't something we can answer, as we don't know your skills.

Seems to me, would be most important to find out just where the leak is, and zero in on what it will take to replace a seal or a gasket.
You can go to jdparts and look at the possible seals and gaskets that could be the cause, especially after pinpointing the location of the leak.

With that erra tractor on the top of the hydrostatic pump there are two relief valves, they are know to leak with age. You'll have to remove the fender deck to see these.
