Rotary Cutter JD1025R Brush Hog shear pin vs slip clutch

Does anyone running a JD1025R have trouble breaking shear pins on a 4ft. brush hog? If so do you have a solution?

It isn't necessarily a tractor problem. One of 2 things, on many Deeres for a long time, the E pto causes the pto to start and stop abruptly, It doesn't modulate on slowly or wind down (PTO) when disengaged. Therefore when putting a cutter on a Deere, it is always recommended to go w/ a slip clutch.

The second possibility is what you are cutting or trying to cut. It doesn't take a lot to shear a pin. Maybe raise it up some to get off ground more.

I usually slow my tractor rpms before engaging the implement. Use grade 8 bolts which Deere specifies in other bolt applications as when they go you get a clean cut and can find the pieces to dig out. I use a lock nut (regular nut with a nylon insert) and don't tighten it all the way. I leave a little slack such that you can wiggle the bolt when finished installing. They don't last very long if I run them up tight and torque them. I guess it has to do with the interface of the shaft to the collar.....slop.

I prefer bolts to slip as I can depend on the bolt. The slip, who knows. Will it or won't it even if you do that annual maint and adjustment on them. BTDT
