Hi I'm looking at buying a JD 4 bottom semi mount plow. Do not know the model number but it's older. Any pros or cons to JD plows vs other makes?

Deere made some good plows but it depends on the model. I usually like those old Ford or Massey plows myself.

I think it can be safely said that most John Deere implements are consistently are among the best. Ford, International and Massey all have their followers as well. Barring damage or being worn out, all are a good choice. Look for welds or the frames being sprung out of square.

Correct. From what I can tell this plow was used very little. The points and moldboard look almost new but with a layer of rust. No holes and points look almost new. All the linkage for rear wheel is tight and all bearings are good. The seller said his brother bought it 15-20 years ago to try to be a farmer but blew up his tractor then it sat for 10 years in a shed and then outside for the rest. What's something like this worth?

A quick check at "tractorhouse.com" for John Deere 3PT, 4 bottom plows from dealers, I saw prices from $750-$1000 and higher being common.

I don't have any personal knowledge of Deere plows, but I have read that they pull harder than others, but fracture the soil better. I don't know if that is true, or applicable to your sol.

As far as price, I just bought an unknown manufacture, old four bottom three point plow for $350. It is missing two coulters, is rusty, but works.

Start low negotiate up. I have gotten deals from neighbors that I attribute to their being glad to see a young guy get into farming.

I agree. There's nothing wrong with the older JD bottom plows, but the old fords and ferguson's just pull easier and done a better job. There's been many acres of peanut land broke with them as they were the preferred plows to have around here for many years.

Today, I use a switch plow (JD 3955) and hope I never have to go back to the old days.
