I just finished repairing my JD MX-6 rotary brush cutter after the output shaft snapped as many others have done.
I found a 150HP gear box at D&N equipment in Ohio that I was able to use with a little modification to the deck ( adding two mounting holes and elongating the existing four) and the stump jumper ( drilling the center hole out to 1 1/32 and counterboring the bottom 1 1/2 dia X 7/16 deep. The counterboring is because the new gear box has a threaded shaft and the stumpjumper is held on with a 1" jam nut with red lock tight. If the threaded shaft was a little longer you could use the castle nut provided.
D&N told me they also have a 75HP unit that requires less work to install but I wanted to go big so I don't have to worry about doing this again. The new gear box is massive!! but dropped right inplace.
All in the repair cost me $1000 or less than half what JD wanted and now i have a 150HP gear box and the satisfaction of fixing it myself and not giving JD another dime to fix something that is clearly their poor part quality.
I used the cutter for a few min after assembly and it worked fine!

Glad you got it done.
Considering that your tractor is less than 50hp, that 150hp gearbox should last a while. :D

Just curious. I read the other posts on this repair, but I didn't see anything about a slip clutch. Does your unit have one, did you adjust it prior to the shaft failure, and is it working properly?

Yes there is a slip clutch and I followed the adjustment procedure to ensure it was not frozen up with rust.
when I posted before I forgot i had to purchase an adaptor to mate the new gear box to my drive shaft. the gear box input splined shaft is a larger diameter so I needed to go up in size. That was another $150 so total cost of the repair was more like $1150.

Sometimes the slip clutch just won't do it, but your chances are better with one than without one.

Sounds like your case it was just a weak part.

At any rate, glad you got it back up and going. Doing it yourself and saving a few bucks always feels good. :thumbsup:
