do i get husband metric scoket set for his 4520 JD for christmas?

I suggest you call the Dealer he bought the tractor from. The 4520 is built in the USA, but that doesn't mean they use American sizes.
I wish I could be more help, but my 790 is Japanese built and uses all metric sizes.
Well, I will help...get your hubby a quality set of sockets (no $9.99 Harbor Freight specials). If you really love him, get him a decent air compressor (with enough capacity to run an impact wrench).

Both. would be best, those were made in a lot of places and individual components are likely metric. Ex. hydraulic pump. Sheet metal and attachments are likely standard.
At least metric

If you love your husband don't buy him CHEAP tools. They will break and slip off bolts. Get him well made (expensive) tools especially for tractors.

I hate it everytime I use a cheap tool.

While I haven't done much, everything I have done has been metric...

OK let me really answer the question for you. 1st off Craftsman tools will be fine. They are a decent tool with a lifetime guarantee and will not break the bank. They are also easy to replace. I my experience you need both metric and American standard. There is nothing built in one place anymore so both standards show up on everything these days. Now the next question is 1/2 inch drive or 3/8 drive. I have to say I use my 3/8 drive sets a lot more than my 1/2 drive but when you need a 1/2 inch drive you need it. But then if it was all I had I would want a 3/8 drive set. But then a back-hoe would be assume too. I hope this helps

She is already making the tractor payments, we can't expect her to buy the backhoe! I think a set of 3/8 drive, metric and inch sockets would be nice, but the big question is, does he already have it? If my dear wife bought me a set, I would ask her if she had lost her marbles, as I probably have at least 3 sets of each scattered between the house and the garage. (I used to have a job that required a set at work, along with needing a set at home)
Get somebody to inspect his toolbox and see what he needs first!

What I have discovered is that what every man who gets into tractors and implements needs is a 3/4 drive or a 1" drive socket set.

I've got a 1/2" drive which I can get by with but I often find myself in many a situation where I need bigger sockets than I can get with the 1/2" drive (and I have the largest you can get with 1/2").

My recommendation is to get a good 3/4 or 1" drive set along with some oversized sockets that don't come in the set. Good 3/4 sets are VERY expensive and I can't find them at Sears in my area.

As I am a casual user rather than a mechanic I'm going to go with the cheaper sets. If I could order from Harbor Freight, this is what I'd get along with this set of jumbo sockets of sizes larger than the set has.

If my wife got me these two for Christmas, I'd be overwhelmed with joy!

Canoetrpr, You can order from harbor freight, I have ordered from them several times, the bigger stuff comes by courier, and they will mail the smaller stuff. You just have to phone them.

Everything that I've encountered on my JD 4200 that came from Deere, et al is metric. Everything that I've added is American standard. I should switch to metric!

If hubby doesn't have a decent set of sockets in either measurement system; get him some of both, or better yet a gift card to his favorite tool store and let him pick out what he wants and needs.

If my wife ever buys me any hand tools I will begin buying her Vac cleaners, apple peelers, cherry pitters and curtains!
She keeps out of my shop tooling and I keep out of her kitchen tools.
Now a gift certificate to Harborfreight might be different----
or that backhoe previously mentioned----
