Engine starts and runs fine but when the mower is engaged the engine shuts down.

First thing that came to mind was a safety switch somewhere... not sure which one, maybe a seat switch expecting you to be sitting down or ??

Without enough information I would hazard a guess that something is preventing one or both of the mower blades from engaging/spinning. It's like running over something or a particularly thick patch of growth... the mower 'bogs down' and shuts the engine own.
Inspect your blades underneath. Something may be wrapped around them.
