My 16 hp V-Twin in the JD LT166 is leaking oil down the drive shaft. The engine model is 303777 Type 1147-E1. I've pulled the motor and notice what looks like a plastic seal. How difficult is it to replace the seal? Is there anything else I should consider?

805049S Just note how far it is driven in before you hook the old one out. Or partially thread in a sheet metal screw and tug the seal out. A little lube on the lip and carefully sneak it up over the boss on the crank. Then you can tap it in evenly. Sometimes a piece of PVC pipe will work as a driver.

I am having difficulty finding the part numbers I need or a diagram that shows the seal for the drive shaft. Any suggestions?

With engine pulled I would also check to see if the oil pump on that model has a cover. Some of the older Briggs motor had a cover held on with three screws and sealed with an O-ring this O-ring gets hard from repeatedly being heated & cooled and can also leak.

Briggs has a good parts look up just type in the model code & type number.

Assuming the seal in question is the lower sump seal @ the crankshaft, the part number was 805049S.

attachment should be the illustrated parts list for your engine. Item 20 is the shaft seal seal on the PTO side.

First let me apologize for this taking so long, life sometimes gets in the way.

Thanks to all of you for the input. I was able to secure the right part and have installed it. No leaks now.

The suggestion about using a piece of PVC pipe, the part number and diagram wer ella helpful.

Thanks again
