Be sure to check that the PTO switch isn't fried either. Mine was.
Unless you have a shop manual, you won't find any instructions. It's a pretty straight forward job; but awkward to do.

Once you get it changed try to limit the use as much as you can, and engage at low speed. I haven't had near as many problems since I started being more careful with it.

I always feel like every engagement of the PTO clutch on my LA145 may be the last one because of the shock load with a 48" or 54" deck. When I was looking at X320 mowers for my brother, I was astounded how smoothly the electric PTO clutch engages on those. I believe the L130 has the same clutch as my LA145 and is just an example of many items that are high maintenance on these low-end JDs. The one on my LA145 broke the retainer strap and ripped the wires out of the connector plug last year. I repaired it and added an additional stiff spring to absorb some of the shock in addition to the strap. So far, I haven't had anymore failures.
The way this clutch feels reminds me of the clutch I had on an old Datsun 240Z. When I replaced the clutch plate, they gave me one for a 4-cyl Datsun pickup instead of the correct one, and I didn't notice. The replacement had only 1/2 the springs on the center hub as it should have. Everytime I left off the clutch, it would shake and shudder. Finally it self-destructed the clutch because the shock got to it. I took it to a local shop for repair and he showed me the clutch and explained the difference after fixing the problem. It made a huge difference.
