Did the L/LA series have PTO's, and any kind of hydraulic rear lift?
They look like Cub sized tractor. Similar specs?

Robert, I don't recall an LA, but our John Deere L did not have a PTO or hydraulics at all. You raised and lowered a single bottom plow with a strictly mechanical linkage. Of course I've mentioned before on here about that being the first tractor I ever used. And since they were a little earlier than the Cubs, I doubt that the specs were very similar. I've found one place on the Internet that lists the L as a drawbar HP of about 7 and a "belt" hp of about 9, and made from 1937 to 1946, but we had no belt on ours; don't even know where you'd attach one. I do recall my Dad joking about the horsepower because we got it used about 1952, it was supposedly a 1940 model, and he said it was supposed to be 11 hp, but was worn enough that he figured it was about one mule power. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif However, he did later have the engine overhauled and it did a lot of work on our place. Two cylinder gas, 3-speed forward, one reverse, hand crank in the front end.

The LA had a PTO that I recall, and the belt pulley was on the left side just ahead of the clutch pedal. And one could get them with electric start. Mine was hand crank, and the mule part was that DanG crank kicking back with violence.
The connect through Yesterdays Tractors site, gives HP for the L as 10.4, drawbar 9, and the LA as 14.3 and drawbar 13.1. Deere specs
I sold mine when I bought an 8' tandem disk and seemed I was pulling the insides out of it when disking in 1st gear. Traded up for a TO-30 Ferguson.
As a very young lad during WWII, I used to follow in the furrow of the neighbors' LA, walking in the fresh dirt barefoot, and smelling the new dirt. Good memories. Bought my own in '65.
