While moving snow this week, I could smell diesel fuel. I shut the engine down and looked around the engine. The number 2 injector is wet. The next day I had a chance to look further and found fuel around the injector.

I looked at the tec manual for the injector r&r and found that the injector can be disassembled. There is a plastic vent hose that comes off the valve cover and is installed next to the injector. If I push against the hose, it takes a fair amount of pressure to move it away from to injector.

As I look at the breakdown of the injector, I have an idea what the problem might be. Because the fuel lines and return hose assembly have to be removed from all 3 injectors and parts being special ordered, I am wondering if anyone has seen this type of leak.

Any ideas will help.

Thanks Ray

WHAT PART has to be special ordered?? The return rail.??
There is a copper gasket under the return rail ON the INJECTOR.. they cost about 1.-2.00 each..

Thanks for the return.

The break down of the nozzle shows 3 bronze washers. The injector lines are individual but there is a leak off hose under the lines that has to be removed intact which means that all 3 lines have to be removed to remove 1 injector.

under the leak off hose for each injector, the break down shows a bronze washer then an o ring then the nozzle. under the nozzle, there is another bronze washer, a heat protector then another bronze washer.

My thinking is the plastic vent hose putting pressure on the top of the nozzle might be the cause of the leak from the o ring.

I have dye in the fuel so when I clean and run the engine, I will see the the area of the injector that the fuel. I don't have a problem removing the injector, but I am hopping someone has seen this before and give me a hint as to what to look for when I disassemble the injector.

About a month ago, I had to replace the heaters and saw how the vent hose was routed from the factory and was concerned about it then.

Thanks Ray

U don't need to take the injector out OR tear it apart.. your problem is either a brittle line or a loose washer under the return pipe.
& its up to u to determine which one.. or replace both..
There are 2 diff. types of return lines setups.. 1 is a constant "steel" pipe that runs from inj. to inj. w/ a rubber line at the end..
The other setup is each inj. has a fitting w/ 2 barbs & connected to the next inj. w/ a rubber line..
Those lines get brittle & crack & its VERY COMMON.. The line is METRIC.. 6 or 7mm.. if u go to JD they'll have the correct ones.. IF u go to the parts house, you'll prob. have to settle for the sae equivalent.. So take a line w/ you..

Thank you for the reply

After running the engine last night, I came to the same conclusion. I have had the tractor for 20 years so some things have to start failing.

I washed the injector area with clean solvent then ran the engine for about 15 minutes before the dye started to show under an infra red light. it appeared to be from the nipple for the rubber hose. I owned an auto repair business for 44 years and have always been a firm believer in oem parts. my next step is a call to JD and order all the pieces to replace the upper o rings, bronze bushings and new rubber hoses.

It will probably take a week or two, but I will let you know how it turns out. Your info supports what I thought it might be.

Again thanks a lot. Ray

Good.. & your welcome..
Where are these Orings u speak of?? I just don't want u to be "special" ordering parts u don't need..
Externally, theres only copper/aluminum gaskets & hoses..

The o rings are in the picture breakdown. At the top of the injector, it shows an o ring then a bronze washer then the leakoff or return hose then a nut then the metal fuel line from the injector pump.

I ordered the parts yesterday, and JD showed the o rings in their parts. Nothing from JD is cheap but I am not taking any chances.

Thanks for the concern. Ray

I "think" what you'll find when u get your parts is the "oring" is a color coded ring that slips around the neck of the injector to ID it.??

I think you are right. The dealer does not offer any insight on what or why a part is. A drive to JD is an hour if the traffic is light, so getting a small part that I might need is cheaper than a return trip.

Yesterday, I had to move some material and could see that the leak has grown. The rubber hose for the return is looking more suspect.

Thanks Ray

Word of warning, the JD number for the return hose just gets you some large OD 3/16" ID rubber fuel line that isn't really the correct stuff. Hard to flex without kinking, need to use zip ties to keep it on the nipples. It works but it's not as nice as generic, conventional injector return line IMHO.
