Had a hose come loose on my jd tractor and lost all my hyd fluid. My tractor manual calls for HY-GARD JDM 20c or JDM 20d. I've always used a universal hyd fluid and it is listed as for JD20a/b/303/ HY-GARD. Is the jdm 20c just a new jd number or is it a different fluid than the other. Confusing, but the difference in price is $25. for the universal vs $56. a 5 gal bucket for the jd fluid

If me, I'd buy the Deere fluid. Small price to pay, in my opinion.

Around here, even the Wally World universal is ~$50, and Costco is $45 for 5 gal.

I would be very suspicious of anything that was only $25.

Usually, right beside the universal hydraulic fluid is "replaces" John Deere hydraulic fluid for the same price. That stuff should at least meat the J20C specs, which are not the same at all as J20A/B.

John Deere Hy-Gard is J20C with better antiwear and better brake chatter additives. All Deere requires is J20C, but Hy-Gard is much better than that.

I went ahead and bought the JD HY-GARD, it was $55. for 5 gal. The service manager told me the other would be ok but later on if something went wrong, i would always wonder if that was it. So anyways i'm set for now. Thanks guys

JD always tries to scare people into using their fluids.

Theres some truth to that, BUT...$55.00 for good quality oil in a JD pail that is "guaranteed" to work or $55.00 for "should be ok" oil....

Yeah I know you can go buy generic branded oils of questionable quality for less, but any brand name good stuff is right in line if not more then the pail of JD stuff. Go price out Donax TD or Mobilfluid TD (or similar brands/qualities)....it was CHEAPER for me to go with the Deere stuff and sleep easy at night.

I will say that more then a few people I know all say the same thing, use OEM oil in your Deere/Kubota/CaseIH.....I've had personal experiences which prove it too...

John Deere HY-GARD is a copy of IH Hy-tran. One big advantage these oils have over J20a/b/c, ISO32/ISO46 hydraulic oil, engine oil and ATF is how they deal with water. They were designed to be able to sit in an unused machine for extended periods of time and keep the components from rusting. If that sounds like you - invest the money.

HyGuard and HyTran have completely different viscosity profiles. They are quite different oils and are not cross-compatible except to those who think "oil is oil, it all comes from a hole in the ground".

You might want to tell that to IH and Deere since if you look at there spec pages they list them as being compatable. NOTE: CNH MS-1209 & MS 1210 are HyTran

Applications

Hy-Gard hydraulic/transmission oil provides the best performance and wear protection for John Deere hydraulic and transmission systems.

Recommended for equipment with either common system reservoirs or separate transmission and hydraulic systems, including those with wet brakes and wet clutches.
