JD GT275 no gas

I've replaced the fuel pump and the fuel lines. If I put gas in the line running directly to the carburator it runs for a bit otherwise it won't suck any gas into the lines. I can blow back through the pick up line, so it is clear. Any ideas?

Is your new fuel pump actually putting out fuel? Do you have the in and out lines connected correctly. Don't laugh, a friend got a great deal on a gasoline powered welder and all he had to do for repair was swap the lines. Is your carburetor float set to the correct level? The float turns fuel flow on and off to prevent flooding the engine with too much fuel.

Is the engine a Kawasaki FC540V engine ?

If so, it uses a pulse type pump. Did you check the operation of the old pump ?

As Roadworthy said, are you sure you have the hoses connected properly ?

Make sure that the pulse line hose is connected to the pulse port on the engine and that it is not cracked.

Did you also replace the fuel filter ?
