Question for the experts.....
I have a JD GT 275 that I pulled out of the shed the other day for the first mow of the year. The battery was dead so I jumped it and it fired up as it should have.

When I pulled the little button, that looks like the PTO button on my 4510, it spun up the mower blades and the blower that pulls the clippings into the bags. After about a minute the blades quit running and the blower also stopped.

I checked under the deck and every thing worked so I pulled the button again with the same results.

Thoughts on what is going on? I hate running it up to the local JD lawn mower place since I dont have a lot of confidence in them.

Thanks in advance.

I'll take a stab at this...

I'm guessing that the blower is powered by the battery? If so, what I'm guessing is that the blower and the electric engage of the PTO require charge you don't have in your battery.

I'd put the battery on a charger and give it a good charge. You may have a truely dead battery and have to replace it, or you may just need a good charge.

If that doesn't work, there may be a need for a dealer, but hey! Try the cheap stuff first, right?

You probably already know this but I will give it a shot just in case. Are you staying in the seat when the blades are on? Some units with the brake engaged & the PTO on, will stop just the blades when you get off the seat. The same goes for when you place it in reverse. Could the switch be bad & the vibration after a minute or so, makes it open up? Just a few thoughts.

mwood,
the blower and the blades are powered by a belt from the engine as are the blades through a couple of belts. That being the case I am not sure its exactly that. But, it does seem electrical to me in some way. Its almost like everything gets running and a sensor decides there is an overload and shuts it down.

Ron,
That was my first thouht but when this happens the engine continues to run although the blades and blower stop. Normally the kill switch stops everything.

I wonder if I ruined something when I jumped it......

The seat switch will cut out the magnetic clutch, and not necessarily kill the engine.

At least that is the way it works on My GT242.

How much current does the magnetic clutch take to keep the PTO engaged? I would think that the engine would be able to keep up with the current necessary, but if the battery is dead, it's anyone's guess. What happens if you turn the headlights on? Do they too go out after a minute or so?

tomnky and mwood,
I was not aware it was magnetic and I did not even think to look at the lights.
I will try to look at it tonight when I get home. Maybe I will buy a new battery and see if it works then.

I will let you know what I find out on Wed.

thanks all,
Mark

The part of the low voltage that makes me think twice, is the fact that the tractor starts every time? I would imagine if the battery is strong enough to start the tractor, then it should run quite a wile with the little draw of the electric clutch. I know with my 445 i had a charging issue this winter, and it turned out to be a plug at the regulator had come off, and there was no charging. The tractor would run after a jump start for 20-40 mins.. till the juice starved the ignition system... I know it's a totally different tractor, but the point is that if it's strong enough to start the tractor,, I think voltage would be sufficient to keep the pto engaged.....
I tend to think it's in the safety switches, but do a few more tests and see how things look...

If the electro-magnetic clutch draws too much current it will blow a fuse.seems like the fuse on mine is a 10 amp fuse..I think Yours probably uses the same clutch as it fits several different models.

Sure sounds like the seat switch to me.
