JD Gator 4x2 steering rack issues

I have an older 4x2 Gator. It runs great and saves me a ton of work around the house. It even gets out on the farm to help sometimes. Since I have owned it, the rack and pinion has been acting up. When I turn all the way left it "skips". Guessing it is a bad tooth. Before I break down and buy a new rack I figured I would see what you guys had to say. Anyone ever take one if these racks apart? They look pretty simple. I haven't taken it out yet but soon I may. Any chance of fixing it?
