I have been maintaining engines large and small for years in my cars and lawn equipment. Measuring the oil level on the dipstick was always quite predictable: if the engine is cold, the oil has settled and the reading will be the highest, and if you check it 10 minutes or so after running the engine, the oil level will be a bit lower on the dipstick as all of the oil has not run back into the crankcase.
I had a GT275 for years that worked like this, as with every other engine I've owned.
I recently bought a D140 and at the 8-hour mark, I did the required oil/filter change. With the specified 2 qts of oil back in it, the oil level indicated right at the "Low" mark on the dipstick after running the engine briefly and letting it go completely cold. I ran the engine again and checked it just for the **** of it after 10 minutes or so, it was close to the "Full" mark. I let it go cold over night and it was down by the "Low" mark.
Knowing that the manual says to keep it between the marks when cold, I added a little oil and now when it's stone cold, it measures right between the marks. If I check it 10 minutes after running, it registers above Full.
This seems weird to me. I double/triple-checked each time to make sure that I am not reading the oil running back down the dipstick after running the engine. These are clearly oil level readings.
What's up with this? Any advice?
