I have a 2004 John Deere CX gator with approximately 900 hours. I bought it new and it has been very dependable. Lately, I have noticed a noise in the rear end, a type of whistling-clicking noise when it is in forward and reverse gears. It doesn't click in neutral; therefore, I think it is something with the transaxle. I have checked the drive belt and it seems to be ok. It has plenty of the correct gear oil in it. Thanks for any suggestions as to what it could be.

I've not had one apart. I was at the dealer dealer a while back and they were discussing the gator transmission noise and what the repair was with a customer. It must be fairly common and a quick ask at the counter may get you an idea of how to move forward. I was thinking it was chain related? It's been a while.

It is a locking rear dif? Could be the lock mechanism is in process of shelling.
