JD 820 Noise When Clutch Is Engaged

In a gear transmission, what purpose does the trans. Pump serve?
Does it help supply oil to the front mount pto pump?
Why does the pump stop turning with clutch engaged?

I do realize it is a 2 stage clutch, push in half way to change gears or all the way to engage/disengage pto.

The transmission pump supplies oil to lube the transmission and also supplies oil to the main hydraulic pump. It also supplies oil pressure to engage the optional independent pto clutch or Hi-Lo if equipped. It is true that the pump stops turning when the clutch is pushed down all the way. The small reservoir in front of the radiator supplies oil the the main pump while the clutch is pushed down. If you have internal leakage in the rockshaft valve or steering valve or scv, the oil supply runs out quickly when clutch is pushed down. The original poster said hydraulics worked Ok after cleaning screen and replacing filter. I assumed his noise was throwout bearing, but hydraulic pump cavitating definitely will make noise also. Hydraulics should be extremely jerky and slow while this is happening.

I agree. However, there are some caps about 2.5 inch in the side of tractor next to the clutch pedal. One is to access a grease fitting on the throwout Bering. Pop the cap off with a screw driver and ther is a grease fitting.
May have to turn over engine to line up with access. Pump 1 pump of grease.
Work clutch in and out, then 1 or 2 more pumps. Too much grade and it will get on clutch disc. This might solve it.

I have an 820 utility since new and it is a great tractor.

I went over today to finish the service on the 820 & my dad's other tractor. The clutch noise didn't seem as loud today as it did last week? I did pump some grease into the fitting through the pop-out side cover last week for the throw-out bearing so maybe that helped after using the clutch some. There seemed to be a lot of old grease in beside the zerk fitting so I'm not sure if someone has been greasing it before but I need to get some of the old grease out somehow.

IMHO if greasing throwout brg quietens the noise then more than likely the clutch pedal has insufficient free play(travel).

I've got a tech manual on order so I'll try adjusting it then. Thanks.
