JD 820 3 cyl diesel fuel problem

   / JD 820 3 cyl diesel fuel problem #31
I second checking both main and rod bearings and looking at bearing 1/2s and bearing surfaces of the crank.

I don't think JD offered a HD front axle for loader use, but I would want it to have side frames.

I need to get the broken IP driveshaft out of the engine. I removed the nut and washer along with the spring and cap, but it is a keyed, tapered shaft. How do I get it out? No room to swing a hammer with the radiator so close.

Thanks

I'm finding it hard to find time for working on this tractor, it has been on the back burner. I finally removed the radiator so I could see the crank pulley. It has a U mark, it also could be a lightly stamped 0. Advanced quite far from that is an S and very close but further advanced to that S is 28. Would TDC be the U looking mark? I know that I will have to determine which revolution is TDC. The manual says nothing(I can find)about these marks. I'm guessing the U should be a Zero for 0 degrees and was dented, worn off, or never stamped well. Plus what does S stand for?
Thanks

Inj pump timing marks for JD diesel engines are located on engine flywheel not front crankshaft pulley. Timing opening is accessed on LH rear of engine on flywheel housing. After removal one reverses window cover retaining bolt to put in timing hole in flywheel.
I highly recommend you acquire a JD tech manual #4212 $93.33 from Search for Equipment Publications - Technical Information Store or call 1-800-522-7448 or place of your choice. I will caution you that some aftermarket tech manuals are not reproduced very well.

I have a 4212, but it isn't helping me with the crank pulley. I asked a John Deere mechanic at a Kenworth/JD dealer and he said to use the crank pulley, then check that the #1 valves are closed when on the mark. The pulley has the marks I mentioned, but I'm not seeing anything about it in the 4212. The 4212 doesn't cover my injection pump either. The version of the 4212 for my tractor, doesn't seem to be available. The dealer parts guys couldn't find the info either. Why did JD put marks on the pulley with a place on the housing to line up with, if it isn't used? The info in the manual about the pin isn't detailed well either. The dealer could't find any detailed info in the parts manuals either. They could only guess what I had, that is why he said to use the pulley marks. I thought the marks would be more obvious in their meaning. I was there an hour.

Thanks Jim, that is helpful. The more info I get helps complete the picture.
