JD 770 tractor shifter loose

I was working the 770 yesterday and noticed the gear shifter shaft was rotating freely. I can however shift between gears.
Is there an easy way to remove the cover and see what is going on?

Welcome ! It's possible the split pin at the base of the shifter lever is broken, missing, or the part it engages with is broken. Should not be hard to inspect. If broken, I suggest you find the pieces before they get caught up in the more serious machinery nearby.
