JD 755 Compact

I just bought a John Deere 755 and need to know what oil to use for the engine and rear end. Also any tips on general maintainance. I am new to deisel engines and could use some advise...

As far as oil, any good quality rated for use in diesel engines will be fine. I normally use 10W-30, but I don't have any preference for a given brand. I guess Quaker State would be my most frequently used brand.

As far as maintenance...try your local Deere dealer (since the place you bought the 755 from didn't have the manual?) to see if they can order you a manual. I know you can buy one at your local Tractor Supply, but it'll be somewhat generic (not a Deere manual).

However, start looking around your tractor for grease (zerk) fittings. You should have one at the front wheels pivot points, the front axle pivot (for steering). The axle U-joints...brake pedal pivots... Reckon you should see 6 or 8 zerk fittings, not including the front end loader (if you've got one). If you've a loader, any place that can pivot or move will have a zerk fitting to lubricate. Per the manual, my 670 should be greased every 10 hours. I use a general purpose high pressure grease.

That 755 is a solid machine. I'm sure you'll enjoy working with it.

Rick - For manuals you can either call JD at 1-800-522-7448, or register on-line (johndeere.com or deere.com), select Parts and follow registration instructions. Once registered you can order parts and manuals (look for technical publications on lower left of screen) and have them shipped via your local dealer. The parts section has some excellent graphical look up features (look for - "Click here to open John Deere Parts Catalog).

Glad you finally found this site Rick. Don't worry about the grease as we have plenty of it. We have about 50 tubes of NH grease down in our cellar so help yourself when you need some (plus as everyone knows, using NH brand grease in your JD tractor will raise its resale value /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif)

I also have a JD 755 (1987). The engine oil depends on the air temperature you experience. I use 10W40 in the Spring/Summer/Fall and 10W30 in the winter. Oil capacity is 2.86 qts. with filter.

I am not sure what you mean by rear end oil. Do you mean the hydraulic oil? If so, the manual calls for JD Low Viscosity Hy-Gard. The machine holds 3.7 gal of hydraulic oil. There is both a replaceable, spin on filter and a reuseable screen.

You did not mention if you have 4WD. If you do, the front axle contains 2.25 qts of API GL-5 Gear Oil. As with engine oil, the weight for the gear oil depends on air temperature. 80W90 is good for -15F to almost 100F.

There are 14 grease fittings on the 755 with 4WD. 16 fittings on the 2WD version.

Don't forget the air filter and fuel filter.

Take Mike's advice and go to ebay and get your manuals. I see them out there EVERY day. Do a search by John Deere 755 and you'll find not only owner operator manuals but also you might find some maintenance manuals. I have an 855 and am always looking on ebay for a screaming deal.

You'll find that 755 will do most everything you ask. Have fun.
